The Norwalk girls wrestlers placed sixth out of 16 teams at Saturday’s Ames Invitational while the Norwalk boys wrestlers placed seventh out of 15 teams at the Keith Young Invitational in Cedar Falls.

The Warrior girls scored 96.5 points on the day and were led by five place-winners. Madison Froehle placed third at 105 pounds, going 3-1 with two pins and a technical fall. Lizzie Reeves placed third at 235, going 2-1 with two pins. Norwalk also had three girls place fifth: Maya Wojtowicz at 125, Kaylie Popiano at 130 and Katie Liedtke at 170. Popiano recorded a team-high four wins on the day – each by fall.

The Warrior boys posted 133.5 points against a tough field in Cedar Falls as nine wrestlers placed in the top six. Three Warriors finished as a runner-up in their bracket: Kadan Borcherding-Johnson at 165, Victor Esparza 190 and Harrison Tripp 215. They combined to win seven matches on the day, including two pins for Kadan Borcherding-Johnson. Asaiah Martinez placed third at 113, going 2-1 with two tech falls. Dominic Tigner had a pair of pins while placing fourth at 157 and Liam McLaughlin recorded two tech falls and one pin, placing fifth at 150. Norwalk’s sixth-place finishers were Blake Lee at 144, Matthew Handley 157 and Tyler Stanford 175, who combined for six pins.

The Norwalk girls wrestling team returns to action on Tuesday for a home meet at 5:00 p.m. The Warrior boys will travel to Oskaloosa for a Little Hawkeye Conference dual on Thursday at 6:30.

Warrior Basketball teams at Winterset

The Norwalk basketball teams return to non-conference action Monday night with a girl-boy doubleheader at Winterset. The girls game will start at 6:00 p.m., followed by the boys game at 7:30. Pregame coverage on 94.3 KNIA and kniakrls.com (KNIA3) begins at 5:45.

The Class 4A fourth-ranked Norwalk girls are 5-0 following Friday’s impressive 70-35 win over Pella in the Little Hawkeye Conference opener. The Warrior boys are 1-1 after opening conference play with a hard-fought 58-54 victory over the Dutch.
