The Storm women’s basketball team overcame a dreadful third quarter to defeat the University of Dubuque 87-79 on Saturday, while the Storm men gave up a 20-0 run in the second half as they fell to the Spartans 81-67 with the doubleheader heard live on 94.3 KNIA.
The Storm women shot lights out from beyond the arc in the first half making 10 of their 14 attempts as they led 28-22 after the first and 52-42 at halftime. Simpson went ice cold in the third however, getting outscored 26-10 by the Spartans to trail 68-62, but found their rhythm again in the fourth as they outscored Dubuque 25-11 in the final frame to hold on for the victory. Elle Street led the Storm in scoring on 8-9 shooting including 5-6 from deep for 22 points.
The Storm men earned a 10-point advantage with 12:43 left in the first half over the powerful Spartans, but couldn’t hold on as they trailed 36-32 at the break. The game continued to be back and forth when Simpson trailed by just two points at 45-43, when Dubuque went on a 20-0 run to put the game out of reach. Bo Huston led the team with 13 points, while Cam Henderson scored 12 with 6 rebounds.
The Storm women are now 4-5 and 2-1 in conference action, and will next play on Saturday against Faith Baptist Bible College, while the Storm men are 1-7 and 0-3, and will travel to Bethany Lutheran on Saturday.
