It was a cruise control, 67-15 victory for the Newton girls basketball team over Des Moines East, as heard live on KRLS3 Tuesday night. The Cardinals outscored the Scarlets 30-3 in the first quarter and 14-3 in the second to pull away early. Alex Riney led the way with 13 points, followed by 12 from Payton Carkhuff and 10 for Tori White. The Cardinals are now 4-1 overall and join the boys for a Little Hawkeye Conference doubleheader Friday at Dallas Center-Grimes.

Newton’s boys swimmers fell to Boone, but broke a pool record at the YMCA Tuesday night. No team scores were available immediately following the meet, but MacK Copeland, Finn Martin, Ethan Comer, and Evan Marshall beat the previous best mark in the 200 Freestyle Relay with a time of 1:42.53. Caleb Punt won the 200 SC meter freestyle with a time of 2:17.9. No other results were immediately available.
