The Newton boys wrestling team went 2-0 in a home triangular against Pella and Lynnville-Sully Thursday night,  while the girls wrestling squad defeated Pella in a home dual match..

The Cardinal boys earned both of their victories in convincing fashion, defeating the Dutch 52-24 and the Hawks 60-9. Newton head coach RJ Brown says Jose Benitez and Kent Montgomery had notable nights, with Benitez getting two contested wins at 285 pounds and Montgomery going up a weight class and beating touted Lynnville-Sully freshman Jett Kramer. 

The Newton girls made it a 3-0 for the Cardinals wrestling teams, winning the closest match of the night 41-39 over Pella. Wins for Newton came at 110 pounds from Kylee Adams, 120 pounds from Julianna Maldonado-Hildalgo, 125 pounds from Alivia Conley, 140 pounds from Johana Cerna, Ella Machin at 170 pounds, Ashlyn VanManen at 190 pounds, and Isabel Talley at 235 pounds.

The Cardinals girls and boys wrestling teams will be back on the mats Saturday morning. The Newton girls will wrestle at an invitational at Southeast Polk High School at 9 a.m., while the boys will participate at an invitational at Saydel High School at 10 a.m.
