The Pella High girls basketball team knocked off 10th-ranked Carlisle 43-35, while the Dutch boys dropped a 56-53 decision to Grandview Christian in a home doubleheader heard live last night on 92.1 KRLS.

In the opener, the Dutch offense was stagnant for most of the first three quarters, and the Wildcats used a 10-0 run to open a 30-20 lead. That’s when Pella finally came to life, sparked by a three-pointer from Jenna Oltman followed immediately by an Oltman and-one three-point play, igniting an extended 19-0 run over the next nearly eight minutes to put the game away.

The Dutch shot just 28% from the field (14-51) and only 14% from the three point line (4-28), but head coach Blaine Forsythe says they did enough in the other areas to get the job done.

“Our shots weren’t falling, but we took care of the defensive end and that led to some shots for us. I couldn’t be more proud of our girls, just the way that we responded from last week and we’ve come up with two big wins so far this week.”

Nine Pella players scored, led by Oltman and Maggie Thompson with eight points. Katie Schekel added added seven points and eight rebounds as the Dutch improve to 4-2 on the season.

In the boys game, Pella had a 15-0 run in the first quarter and a 13-0 run in the second as they built a 33-18 halftime lead over the perennial power Thunder. With the score 38-20 in favor of the Dutch, Grandview Christian exploded with an 18-0 run of their own, and eventually took their first lead of the game since the opening minutes at 43-42 early in the fourth quarter. It went back and forth for the next few minutes, but the Thunder did enough down the stretch to earn the victory.

Jack McGuire led Pella with 18 points and Tyson Barnes added 12 points and eight rebounds. The Dutch drop to 1-2.

Both squads will be back in action tomorrow with a traditional girl-boy varsity doubleheader against Fort Madison starting at 2pm at Pella High School.
