The Indianola boys basketball team earned their first win of the season Friday night in dominating fashion 66-45 over Oskaloosa, while the girls survived overtime to stay undefeated in conference 42-40 as heard live on 94.3 KNIA.
The Indians girls took advantage of Oskaloosa foul trouble to lead early, 9-7 after the first and 22-10 at halftime holding Osky to just three second quarter points. The lead began to tighten in the third quarter as Indianola led only 31-26 heading into the final eight minutes, and Oskaloosa would tie the score with 33 seconds to go, with Indianola narrowly missing the game winner. Indianola outscored Osky 4-2 in overtime with Dana Blake getting all four points to earn the win. Lauren Olson led Indianola with 11 points.
The Indians boys led nearly from start to finish, answering an early Oskaloosa 9-2 run with a 9-0 run themselves and led 14-12 after the first, then outscored Osky 14-3 in the second quarter to lead 28-15 at halftime. The Indians used six three-point shots in the third quarter to blow the game open leading 51-27 going into the fourth, and emptied the bench in the fourth. Head coach Jeff Ebling tells KNIA Sports this early win, and especially the way they did it, helps a lot mentally after a much slower start last season.
Easton McGraw led the team with 18 points, while Derek Wilmott had 14 off the bench. The girls are now 3-3 and 2-0 in conference, and will next play Thursday at North Polk. The boys are now 1-3 and 1-1, and will take on Norwalk on Friday.
