The Jasper County Board of Supervisors have re-established the County Compensation Board. The seven member board’s sole responsibility is to make recommendations on salary adjustments for elected County officials. The County Board of Supervisors can accept the Compensation Board’s recommendations or set the salaries on their own.
A statewide omnibus tax bill that went into effect July 1st of this year disbanded all 99 county compensation boards in Iowa, but each county can vote to reinstate their own compensation boards. According to Chairman Brandon Talsma, all three Jasper County Board of Supervisors felt that having the Compensation Board has been an asset, and that it takes pressure off them. Talsma says the new seven member Jasper County Compensation Board has one representative for each elected county office, except for the supervisors who have two board members.
“Denny Stevenson for the Auditor, Brett Doerring and Denny Vander Weerdt for the Supervisors, Jake Hedgecock for the Sheriff, Jason Morgan for the Treasurer, Allison Udelhoven for the County Attorney, and Nancy Parrott for the County Recorder.”
The newly appointed Jasper County Compensation Board is expected to meet soon to discuss their salary recommendations for the next fiscal year, which begins July 1st, 2025.
