The Newton basketball, boys swimming, and boys wrestling teams are all slated to be in action today.

The Cardinals basketball teams travel to Dallas Center Grimes tonight, to make up Friday night’s games that were postponed due to weather. The Newton boys basketball team is looking for their first 4-0 start to a season since the 2016-2017 season. Newton boys coach Jason Carter says the players on this year’s team responded very well after a rough pre-season scrimmage at home against Carlisle.

“It was kind of an eye-opener for some of them, because they had never played varsity basketball before. But we do have a lot of seniors and they rose to the challenge. We had about as good of a week as we could have hoped for in week one going 3-0. We won the first two convincingly and then a tough overtime game on the road against a conference opponent (in Indianola).”

The Newton girls basketball team will face Class 4A team #8 Dallas Center Grimes in the opening game over the doubleheader. The Mustangs and Cardinals are both 4-1 overall. Newton is 0-1 in the conference while this will be Dallas Center Grimes first conference game.

The NCMP Boys swim team has a dual tonight at Des Moines Lincoln. The Cardinals are coming off a home triangular last Tuesday, in which they defeated Des Moines East 92-63 but lost to Boone 95-65. During the meet, NCMP swimmers Evan Marshall, Ethan Comer, Mack Copeland, and Finn Martin finished second in the 200 freestyle relay with a school record time of 1 minute 42.53 seconds. The previous school record of 1 minute 43.61 seconds was set in 2015. Des Moines Lincoln is currently 2-2 in duals, with wins over Des Moines East and Des Moines Hoover and losses to Ames and Des Moines Roosevelt.

The Cardinal boys wrestling team is also in action this evening, hosting a quadrangular against Carlisle, Norwalk, and Southeast Warren. Last competing on Thursday, the Newton boys wrestling team went 2-0 in a triangular against Pella and Lynnville-Sully. The Cardinals earned both victories in convincing fashion, defeating the Dutch 52-24 and the Hawks 60-9.

The Newton basketball doubleheader at Dallas Center Grimes can be heard live on the KRLS3 stream beginning with pregame coverage beginning at 5:45 p.m., while the NCMP boys swimming team’s dual at Des Moines Lincoln and the boys’ wrestling team’s home quadrangular are slated to start at 5:30 p.m.
