The Knoxville School Board has set a special election for March 4th regarding the voter approved Physical Plant and Equipment Property Levy (PPEL).
The levy is a continuation of a previous levy that was already in place for the district that needs to be renewed every ten years. Knoxville Schools Business Manager Craig Mobley says the levy supports the district in a variety of ways.
“A lot of projects that you can think of that these funds pay for would be the tennis courts project, all the updates and renovations at Randy Wilson Track. We use PPEL funds to purchase maintenance vehicles, transportation vehicles, including school buses, a lot of technology needs, and then a lot of our more expensive fixes at any of the buildings.”
It is also likely that the special election will include filling the school board vacancy after the resignation of former board member Dave Smith. A special school board meeting will be held December 30th to try and appoint someone to fill the current vacancy and the election would be held March 4th for someone to fill the position for the end of the term through January of 2027. The only way this wouldn’t happen is if the board fails to make an appointment by January 4th or if a successful petition is presented to the board by December 27th.
