The City of Pella was awarded a grant from the Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) Board to support the effort to construct a new indoor recreation facility on the east side of the community.

At a meeting today, $500,000 of state funding has now been allocated for the Pella Recreation Center, which has been proposed to be located within the Pella Sports Park. The project, if approved by the Pella City Council this spring following construction bid letting, would construct a two-story building to house sports amenities including a competition swimming pool, indoor turf field, track and multi-purpose gyms.

An IEDA press release claims the space would attract approximately 18,000 players, coaches and family members per year. The total project cost is estimated to be nearly $33 million.

Earlier this week, the Pella City Council unanimously approved moving ahead with potential bids for the rec center proposal, extension of University Street east, and for the renovation of the Pella Community Center.
