While the Pella boys basketball team has hung on with narrow victories, they’ve done so overcoming some gravity on the stat sheet — and key areas that the coaching staff would like to improve during the winter break.

The 4-2 Dutch currently sit at 24th overall in Class 3A in the assist-to-turnover ratio, which sits at .84, and 41st with 15.7 turnovers per contest. To end last winter, Pella was 13th in 3A with a 1.29 ratio and gave away 11.3 possessions per game — 12th best in 3A.

Pella Head Coach Derek Schulte knows their offense can be more explosive (currently ranked 14th in 3A), but in order to get to the level needed to contend for a conference and state title, they will have to distribute the ball a bit better.

Schulte believes a lot of learning is still going on overall, and he’s confident the team can reach new heights once the competition calendar resumes.

The Dutch will open the 2025 portion of the season at Knoxville on January 3rd — a doubleheader that can be heard live on 92.1 KRLS.
