Jasper County Sheriff John Halferty’s thirty-eight year local career in law enforcement officially ends this coming Tuesday, December 31st. A  public retirement celebration for Halferty and his family will take place at the Jasper County Fairgrounds in Colfax one week from today, Saturday, January 4th, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m..

Halferty has been Jasper County’s Sheriff the past 12 years. He started his local law enforcement career with the Newton Police Department, after serving an internship there while in college.

“I got a call from one of their supervisors who knew me and said they were going to be hiring and that I should test for the job. As they say the rest is history. I didn’t think I would get the job but I did. I worked there for about 11 years before I came to the Sheriff’s Office.”

Over the years, Halferty worked his way up from a Jasper County Deputy to Chief Deputy. He was elected Sheriff when Mike Balmer retired, and took office in January 2013.
