It’s been a great start to the season for the Norwalk boys wrestling team. The Warriors have won eight out of 11 duals, with the only three losses coming against top 10 teams in Class 3A. They are 3-0 in Little Hawkeye Conference duals and competed very well at the Keith Young Invitational in Cedar Falls.
Norwalk head coach Jake Brown tells KNIA Sports that he has a fun and talented team to coach. The best part about the Warriors during the early portion of the season, he says, is the culture and camaraderie.
“These guys, when they’re ready to go and they’re into the meet and all these guys are supporting each other and they’re loud and they’re hyped, man this team looks really good. They look really tough,” Brown said.
Leading the way for the Warriors is senior heavyweight Kolton Borcherding-Johnson, who is ranked second in Class 3A. Borcherding-Johnson is 10-1 with eight pins on the season. His only loss was a three-point decision vs. top-ranked Cooper Martinson of Southeast Polk – a match that Borcherding-Johnson led until the final 20 seconds.
Additional state-ranked wrestlers for Norwalk include Dominic Tigner at 157 points, Liam McLaughlin at 150 and Asaiah Martinez at 113. Tigner leads the team with 13 wins. Harrison Tripp, Victor Esparza and Tyler Stanford, among others, are also wrestling very well, and Coach Brown is very excited about the early-season success of senior Blake Lee at 144.
Brown adds that the Warriors need to be ready to go and start out a little stronger in meets when the season resumes in 2025. Norwalk’s next meet will be a double dual at Pella on Tuesday, January 7, at 5:30. They will face the Dutch and Centerville.
