An upcoming burst of cold may not be all bad news for local residents, especially those waiting to use ice skates for the first time this season.

According to the City of Pella parks department, the Caldwell Park ice rink opening date is weather dependent. The ice is built over several days using a layering system. In order to build ice, City of Pella parks staff needs a minimum of four consecutive days with temperatures below 32 degrees, and no 45+ degree days in the extended forecast. This has historically occurred in the first week or two of January.

According to the National Weather Service, an extended streak of highs in the teens and low 20s is expected to last well into next week.

The Spirit of Pella organization is collaborating with the City of Pella for a fundraiser to purchase an ice chiller system. Those who would like to donate can learn more here.
