Newton’s boys and girls basketball teams take on Pella Christian in Newton this evening while the boys and girls wrestling teams are also in action on the road. The boys wrestling squad will be in Cedar Rapids for a dual with Cedar Rapids Kennedy, while the girls wrestling team will be in Osceola for the Clarke Invitational.

The basketball games against Pella Christian will be the first conference games for the Cardinal boys and girls since a home matchup with Pella on December 20th. The Newton boys lost to the Dutch 62-57, while the Cardinal girls fell to #10 Pella 75-47. Since then, the 4-3 Newton Boys defeated Des Moines Hoover at home 45-43 and lost to Knoxville at Wells Fargo Arena 48-43. The Cardinal girls are 6-3 and have won two straight games, beating Des Moines Hoover 58-47 in Newton and Knoxville 53-17 at Wells Fargo Arena. The Pella Christian girls team is 4-5 overall and 0-2 in conference games, while the Eagle boys are 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

The Newton girls wrestling team will compete against  seven squads from central and southern Iowa at the Clarke Invitational tonight.. Among the other seven schools participating with the Cardinals will be Knoxville and conference opponent Dallas-Center-Grimes. The Cardinal girls are coming off a 42-19 dual win at Oskaloosa last Thursday, with wins coming from Julianna Maldonado-Hidalgo, Alivia Conley, Jeralys Casanova, Heather Hanson, Grace Guy, Ella Machin, and Ashlyn VanManen.

The Newton  boys wrestling team also competed last Thursday, going on the road to pick up a 46-36 dual win at Oskaloosa. Kaiden Rogers scored a technical fall. Abel Aldama, Aiden Robson, Lane Rozendaal, Trevor Bennett, and Coleby Revell added victories by pins. Cedar Rapids Kennedy wrestled last Saturday and lost a dual at North Scott 67-12.
