Jasper County Sheriff Brad Shutts has strong family ties to law enforcement. His dad, who is from Jasper County, was a deputy for the Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Department. Sheriff Shutts has childhood memories of going to work with his dad, and says his father always spoke highly of the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office. 

“That really shaped my vision. His kind words and the things Jasper County has always stood for. They always seemed like a professional department that had a lot of good things going and were moving forward. So that was my goal. In September 2002, I reached one of my goals in life and was hired by then Jasper County Sheriff Mike Balmer.”

Sheriff Shutts says he has a brother who is an officer with the Altoona Police Department, and an uncle who was a detective with the Grinnell Police Department. Jasper County Sheriff Brad Shutts talks more about his background on Thursday’s Let’s Talk Newton.
