In their first doubleheader of 2025, Pella Christian fell short in both ends last night at Newton, losing 43-37 in the girls game and 68-51 in the boys game as heard live on 92.1 KRLS.
While the Eagle girls were able to keep the Cardinals within reach for most of the game, they couldn’t muster enough offense with a depleted roster. Already down four players due to injury and Winterim, Pella Christian lost leading scorer Chloe Snyder just before halftime when she came down awkwardly on her right ankle and she missed the rest of the game.
Coach Brendan Foughty appreciated the effort out of the rest of his girls as they continued to compete.
“Every group you saw out there tonight was a group that really hasn’t played a lot of basketball together with a lot of different combinations of five girls out there on the floor. Offense was a challenge, and we didn’t get ourselves in position to be successful consistently enough on the offensive end. Newton made plays at the end of the game that needed to be made, and we didn’t.”
Rachel Kacmarynski led Pella Christian with 15 points and 12 rebounds as the Eagles fall to 4-6 overall and 0-3 in the Little Hawkeye Conference.
As is the case more and more often in the game of basketball, the three point shot made the difference in the boys game. Pella Christian made only one shot from behind the arc all night, early in the first quarter, while Newton knocked down 10 long balls as they led by double digits for most of the second half.
Gilbert Flagel had 16 points, Landon Fransman added 12 and Cooper Sprunk had nine points and 10 rebounds as P.C. drops to 4-4 overall and 1-2 in the LHC.
Up next for both Pella Christian squads is a home doubleheader Friday night against Pella.
