Pella’s basketball teams took different paths to get to the same result in a sweep of Oskaloosa Tuesday, as heard live on the KRLS2 stream. The #10 in 4A Dutch girls held off a late charge by the Indians in overtime to win 51-44, while the Dutch boys exploded to a 74-32 victory at Oskaloosa High School.
The opener featured an early advantage for Pella, building a 14-point lead early in the 2nd quarter. But Oskaloosa’s defense kept the green and white attack off balance from there, at one point taking a lead early in the 4th quarter. The Dutch rallied to a six-point advantage with 1:08 remaining, only for Oskaloosa to hit two key three point shots after Pella missed free throws and turnovers. Katie Scheckel opened overtime with a three-point shot and a steal and score to help seal the contest. She finished with 20 points, followed by eight each from Jenna Oltman and Kamryn Long.
Pella’s boys came roaring out of the gates and never trailed in a first half that featured only two Dutch turnovers and a lead that built to 36 by the halftime break. Griffin Simpson led the way with 14 points, followed by 12 from Jack McGuire.
The Dutch boys improve to 5-4 and the girls are now 9-2, with each earning a second conference win before heading to Eagle Lane on Friday for a doubleheader with Pella Christian.
