Indianola Mayor and recently-elected Warren County Board of Supervisors member Stephanie Erickson announced she will no longer attempt to serve with both governmental entities.
In December, Erickson declared she would continue as the city’s mayor in addition to serving on the Warren County Board of Supervisors after being elected in the November general election. She will now resign from the mayor role, effective at the end of the day today (1/10/2025).
The Indianola City Council met in regular session this past Monday night, which included an opinion from the city attorney regarding the eligibility of Erickson to retain her position after being sworn in as a member of the Warren County Board of Supervisors. The attorney determined the two positions were incompatible, and the council shouldn’t wait on an opinion from the Iowa Attorney General’s Office to decide on vacating the position and selecting a replacement.
The following statement was issued by Erickson:
“As I write this, my heart is filled with gratitude for the privilege of serving as your Mayor over the past three years. It has been one of the greatest honors of my life to work alongside you, advocate for our community, and play a role in shaping the future of Indianola.
At this time, I want to share with you that I will be vacating my seat as Mayor at the end of business today to focus 100% on my newly elected role as Warren County Supervisor for District 4. This decision was not made lightly, but I feel it is the right step to ensure I can dedicate the time and energy this new position requires, while continuing to serve our broader community.
During my time as Mayor, I have been inspired daily by the passion, resilience, and care you bring to our city. Whether through your involvement in local events, support of our schools and small businesses, or engagement with city projects, you’ve shown me what it means to be a strong, connected community.
Together, we’ve faced challenges and celebrated triumphs. From improving infrastructure to fostering growth and development, I am proud of all we have accomplished. None of it would have been possible without your support and the tireless efforts of the city staff, local leaders, and volunteers who work every day to make Indianola a better place for all.
As I step into my new role as County Supervisor, my commitment to Indianola remains steadfast. I will continue to advocate for the needs of our city while also working to support the broader communities of Warren County. I am excited about the opportunity to serve in this capacity and look forward to what we can achieve together.
Thank you for the trust you placed in me as your Mayor and for the countless memories we’ve created over the past three years. While this chapter is coming to a close, my dedication to this community and the people who make it so special will never waver.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Stephanie Erickson
Mayor, City of Indianola”
