A Saturday filled with highlights for the Central College basketball teams resulted in an American Rivers Conference sweep over Loras College that was heard live on 92.1 KRLS.
The Dutch women’s squad earned a 73-63 victory over the Duhawks behind a career high of 30 points from sophomore guard Emily Naughton, while a Karson Wehde layup with 2 seconds left in the game lifted the Central men to a 78-76 win over Loras.
Celebrating her birthday in style, Naughton shot 8-19 from the field, 3-4 from three-point land and 11-13 from the free throw line to best her previous career high of 20 points. The sophomore guard also added eight rebounds, five assists, and a steal. CeCe Moore added her second double-double of the season, scoring 13 points and collecting 13 rebounds, while also recording two blocks and a steal. Trailing 40-36 at halftime, Central outscored the Duhawks 37-23 in the second half and held Loras to just 4-16 from the field in the fourth quarter.
In the nightcap of the twin bill, the Central men found themselves trailing 35-30 at halftime, but found their rhythm in the second half. The Dutch shot 62.9% from the field and 6-10 from three-point land out of the break, to outscore the Duhawks 48-41 to secure the win. Central was led by Joshua Van Gorp, who played 35 minutes and scored 28 points on 13-14 shooting. The All-American center also added eight rebounds, a block and a steal. Including his game winner, Wehde scored 15 points while shooting 5-11 from the field and 3-6 from three. The sophomore also added six rebounds, and three assists.
Both Central basketball teams hit the road on Wednesday, traveling to Lincoln, Nebraska to take on Nebraska Wesleyan University in a doubleheader that is slated to begin at 5:30 pm.
