
The Central women’s basketball team used 36 bench points and high-energy defense to snag a 76-59 road win at Nebraska Wesleyan Wednesday night, while a big night from center Joshua Van Gorp powered the men’s team to a 70-55 victory over the Prairie Wolves.
The Dutch women (10-5, 3-3 American Rivers) were powered offensively by Abby Johnson with 18 points, while Kaitlyn Mumm led the bench unit with 13 points, five rebounds, and two blocked shots. Bailey Reding added 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting off the bench and also pulled down four rebounds. Jasmyn Williams led the team with six assists while adding four points and Emily Naughton contributed six points and three assists. As a team, Central shot 52.5% from the field, and 38.5% from three point range, while holding Nebraska Wesleyan to 34.5% from the field and 36.4% from three.
In the men’s contest, Van Gorp eclipsed 30 points for the third consecutive game, leading all scorers with 31 points on 14-of-18 shooting. The All-American center also collected 11 rebounds for his 10th double-double of the season. As a team, the Dutch (9-6, 4-2 American Rivers) dished out 22 assists with Owen Schipper collecting seven and Kaleb Brand adding six. Schipper scored eight points and had nine rebounds, while Brand had eight points and four rebounds. The Dutch shot 57.7% from the field and 35.7% from three as a team and held Nebraska Wesleyan to 29.9% from the field and 16.1% from three. Central outscored the Prairie Wolves 50-28 in the paint, leading to a 39-26 second half advantage.
The Central basketball teams are back on the road Saturday, traveling to the University of Dubuque for a conference doubleheader that can be heard live on 92.1 KRLS at 1:45 pm.
