The Indianola girls and boys basketball teams recovered from slow first halves of play to sweept Pella Christian at home Friday night, the girls winning 53-36 and the boys 54-44.
The Indianola girls had 12 first half turnovers and shot poorly to trail 22-20 at the halftime break, before both the offense and defense woke up in the second half. Forcing turnovers and turning them into points, the Indians outscored PC 19-8 in the third, and 14-6 in the fourth to secure the win. Lauren Olson dominated, hitting four three-pointers and led all scorers with 25 points, while Madi Grover had 19.
The Indians boys also had a slow second quarter after a good start, leading 13-8 after the first but the offense stagnated and Indianola held on to just an 18-17 lead at halftime. Like the previous game however, the offense began to find it’s rhythm in the third quarter, outscoring the Eagles 25-14 to lead 43-31 going into the final eight minutes and Andrew DeWall would hit 5-7 from the free throw line in the fourth to seal the win. George Blake led all scorers with 17.
Sophomore guard Hayden Schulte said it was a great team win, and they wanted to clamp down defensively in the second half and the offense was able to score more easily when they got stops and turnovers.
The girls are now 4-9 and 3-3 in conference, while the boys are 3-7 and 3-3, with both teams taking a week off before traveling to Newton on Friday.
