Newton’s boys wrestling team and the NCMP boys swim team both earned 5th place finishes at invitationals Saturday, while both Cardinal bowling teams went 1-1.
The Newton boys wrestling team turned in four top five finishes to help secure fifth place in the 15 team field at the 2025 Mike Halupnick Big Red Invitational in Centerville. Seven Cardinal starters were unavailable for the meet. Kent Montgomery placed first at 106 pounds. Aiden Robson at 150 pounds and Lane Rozendaal at 157 pounds earned second place podium spots. Nick Milburn placed 4th at 215 pounds. The Cardinal boys wrestling team will be back on the mats competing Thursday at Dallas Center-Grimes.
The NCMP boys swim team participated in the Cruise-Voss Men’s Invitational at Cedar Rapids Washington High School. Cardinal coach Lucas Warner says the other seven schools presented some tough competition, and thought the team competed very well in their 5th place finish. Finn Martin picked up Newton’s only wins, taking first place in the 50-yard and 100-yard Freestyle. The NCMP boys swim team will be at the Indianola YMCA Thursday to swim against Indianola and Oskaloosa.
The Cardinal Bowling teams beat Bondurant-Farrar at Cardinal Lanes in Newton Saturday, but lost to Oskaloosa. The Newton girls collected 2,097 pins to Oskaloosa’s 2,198. Bondurant-Farrar was third with 1,866. In the boys match, Oskaloosa topped 3,000 pins with 3,054. The Cardinals scored 2,871 and Bondurant-Farrar 2,596. Austin Kennedy bowled a 268 high game and a 450 high series for the Newton boys. Those scores were only topped by Oskaloosa’s Trey Van Wyk, who bowled a 300 game and a 523 series. Cardinal Gabbie Humphrey led all girl bowlers with a 236 high game and a 417 high series. Up next for Newton’s bowlers is a trip to Statesmen Lanes in Oskaloosa Saturday for matches against Pella Christian.
