Newton Police have filed charges against a Missouri man for allegedly skimming credit cards at a gas pump in Newton late last year. Newton Police Chief Rob Burdess says 30-year-old Yohannis Bacardi-Bague is charged with four Class “D” felonies. He’s currently in the Marshall County Jail. Marshalltown Police arrested Bacardi-Bague earlier this month for identity theft and possession of a card skimming device. The Newton Police Department then compared case facts from Marshalltown with skimming incidents reported in Newton this past fall, and determined Barcardi-Bague was responsible for the illegal activity in Newton as well. There were several reports of credit card fraud from people who had paid by card to get gas from a fuel pump at the Git-N-Go gas station at 801 First Avenue West. Based on those complaints, Newton Police have charged Bacardi-Bague with 2nd Degree Theft, Identity Theft, Unauthorized Use of a Credit Card, and Illegal Use of a Scanning Device. Police Chief Burdess notes video evidence collected from automated license plate reader cameras in Newton was vital in this case, and without them the credit card skimming would have gone unsolved.
