The Newton girls and boys wrestling teams are back in action tonight at Dallas Center-Grimes. The NCMP boys swim team is also on the road, swimming against Oskaloosa and Indianola at the Indianola YMCA.
The Cardinal girls haven’t wrestled since Tuesday, January 14th in Pella. Newton defeated English Valleys 48-9 and Norwalk 30-25, but fell to the Dutch 46-28. Three Cardinal wrestlers went 3-0 that night. Stella Cupples won her three matches at 115 pounds, and Johana Cerna at 135 pounds and Ashlyn VanManen at 190 pounds were also unbeaten.
The Newton boys team wrestled this past Saturday and placed fifth in the 15 team field at the 2025 Mike Halupnick Big Red Invitational in Centerville. Seven Cardinal starters were unavailable for the meet. Kent Montgomery stood atop the podium at 106 pounds with another first place finish. Aiden Robson at 150 pounds and Lane Rozendaal at 157 pounds earned second place podium spots. Nick Milburn placed 4th at 215 pounds.
The NCMP boys swim team’s last competition was a 5th place finish at the Cruise-Voss Men’s Invitational at Cedar Rapids Washington High School last Saturday. Finn Martin picked up Newton’s only wins, taking first place in the 50-yard and 100-yard Freestyle.
The NCMP boys swim meet at the Indianola YMCA begins at 5:30 p.m. That’s also when the girls wrestling meet begins at Dallas Center-Grimes, with the boys to follow.
