The Indianola girls basketball team defeated Newton Friday night as the boys team came up short in a Little Hawkeye Conference doubleheader heard live on 94.3 KNIA.

The Indianola girls picked up the gritty 40-28 win over the Cardinals in a defensive battle. It was a low scoring affair as the Indians held just a 16-11 advantage at half and were able to outscore Newton 24-17 in the second half to secure the win. The Indianola girls were led in scoring by Zoey Belt and Alexa Guyer who both had nine points. Indianola girls basketball coach Jeff Janssen said he was proud of his team for their effort in the contest.

“It’s always a game like this, especially at Newton but against Newton. Not the prettiest stats when I look at the scoresheet, but tough teams win tough games and I’m proud of our girls for coming out here and making enough plays to win tonight.”

The Indianola girls improve to 5-9 on the season. The Indianola boys dropped their contest 46-40. The Indians trailed by three at half and were tied at the end of the third quarter but were only able to score two points in the fourth as shots struggled to drop. The Indianola boys were led in scoring by Easton McGraw who had 12 points. The Indians fall to 3-8 on the season. The Indianola girls and boys basketball teams will be back in action on Monday at Ankeny.
