The Indianola City Council opened applications to the public regarding the open mayor position at their meeting earlier this week. Per state code, the council has 60 days to fill the position either via appointment or to declare a special election, and the council elected to fill the position via appointment. Those interested in the position have until February 7th to turn in their application to the city clerk, and the council intends to perform interviews for the position at the meeting scheduled for February 18th, with a possible appointment coming at that time.

Indianola citizens do have the option of petitioning for a special election, and requires signatures equal or greater than 15% of the last mayoral election, which is 495. The special election petition is due by 14 days after the appointment has been made, and is expected to cost approximately $20,000.

The appointment will fill out the remainder of the term, which ends on December 31st, 2025.
