The Newton boys bowling team broke a school record Saturday as part of a boy/girl sweep over Pella Christian, while the Cardinal girls and boys wrestling teams were part of large meets in Colfax and Iowa City.
The Newton boys bowling team broke the school record with a 3,280 series, as they defeated Pella Christian at Statesmen Lanes in Oskaloosa. The Eagles’ boys team collected 2,306 pins. The Cardinal girls also downed the Eagles 1,980 to 1,242. With the wins, the Newton boys and girls are both 5-3 in duals. The next meet for the Newton bowlers will be at home next Saturday, February 1st against Ballard at Cardinal Lanes.
The Newton girls wrestling team finished ninth out of 21 teams at the Girls Varsity Wrestling Tournament at Colfax-Mingo High School. The Cardinal girls secured four top five finishes. At 105 pounds Kylee Adams placed third, Stella Cupples at 115 pounds and Kamiya Lepley at 145 pounds earned 4th place podium spots, while Julianna Maldonado-Hidalgo finished 5th at 120 pounds. Newton wrestlers collected 83 points, while Raccoon River-Northwest won the tournament with 305.5 points. Next up for the Cardinal girls is the Regional Wrestling Tournament at South Tama High School next Friday, January 31st.
At Iowa CIty High, the Newton boys wrestling team was part of a ten team field at the City High Clyde Bean-Brad Smith Duals. The Newton boys went 1-4 and finished 8th. The Cardinals defeated Ottumwa 47-35, but lost to Mt. Vernon 53-26; Iowa City High 40-30; Clear Creek Amana 56-21, and Cedar Rapids Kennedy 38-37. Lane Rosendaal was 5-0 for Newton at 157 pounds. Three Cardinal wrestlers were 4-1. They were Kent Montgomery at 106 pounds, Abel Aldama at 113 pounds, and Nick Milburn at 215 pounds. Kaiden Rogers at 126 pounds was 3-2 and so were Aiden Robson at 150 pounds and Asher Rhoads at 165 pounds. The next competition for the Cardinal boys wrestling team is the Conference Meet next Saturday, February 1st.
