The teams atop the Little Hawkeye Conference basketball standings visit Newton High School tonight to take on the Newton Cardinals. The Dallas Center-Grimes girls are ranked #5 in Class 4A. The Mustangs are 6-0 in the conference with an overall record of 12-3. The Dallas Center-Grimes boys are 8-5, and have six conference wins and no losses.

The Newton girls suffered a 50 point road loss to Dallas Center-Grimes back on January 28th. The Mustangs’ full court pressure forced twenty-six Cardinal turnovers and limited Newton to 17 points on seven of 24 shooting, with three made free throws. Dallas Center-Grimes made 23 of 40 shot attempts along with eleven free throws. The Mustangs’ Devon Carlile led all scorers with 18 points while Addyson Cibula had a team high six points for the Cardinals. Newton trailed 23-2 at the end of the first quarter and 42-8 at the half.

The Cardinal boys lost their January game at Dallas Center-Grimes 73-31. They also got off to a slow start, trailing 17-4 after the first 8 minutes and 38-16 at Halftime. The Mustangs led by 34r points at the end of the third quarter. Newton had 18 turnovers to Dallas Center-Grime’s five. Cardinal coach Jason Carter expects a much better performance from the team tonight.

“Last time we played them was not an indicator of who we are as a group. We just want to compete the way we know we are capable of and roll the ball out there and see what happens.”

The Newton boys are 8-5 overall and 3-4 in the conference. The Cardinal girls have 8 wins and 6 losses and stand at 2-5 in conference games.
