Every Newton High School student who participated in the Large Group District Speech Contest at South Tama High School this past Saturday has advanced to State. Speech and Debate Coach Carroyl Routier says four of the five performances of the 13 students will be repeated at the State Competition in Cedar Rapids Saturday, February 8th. Several of the Newton Speech students will have two state performances.
“We had a group of three advance in Improv and all three will advance in two categories because they were also in Musical Theatre. We had a Readers Theatre group of four that is advancing and three of those four are going to State in two categories as well because they were also in Musical Theatre.”
The February 8th State Competition at Cedar Rapids Washington High School will include schools from the southeast part of Iowa. Newton’s other Speech coach, Will Edgar, says students advance to All-State from there.
“The week after State, February 15th, there is an All-State performance as well. That is at Ames.”
“Anastasia” and “Mean Girls” were the Musical Theatre presentations given by the Newton Students.
