January is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Awareness Month, a month dedicated to raising awareness about human trafficking and educating the public on how to prevent it.
According to the Secretary of State’s website, there are estimated to be more than 27.6 million people — adults and children — subjected to human trafficking around the world, including in the United States, and traffickers often take advantage of instability caused by natural disasters, conflict, or a pandemic to exploit others.
There are many ways to help stop human trafficking, including learning the indicators someone is being transported against their will, being well informed, donating to an anti-trafficking organization, or becoming a mentor to someone in need among others.
