Simpson College and the Indianola community begin a three-day celebration today honoring one of their most famous alumni, George Washington Carver. Carver was a noted American agricultural chemist, agronomist, and experimenter whose development of new products derived from peanuts, sweet potatoes, and soybeans helped revolutionize the agricultural economy of the South.
Today’s events include a presentation of the George Washington Carver Medal to the Hon. Mike Espy, former Member of Congress from Mississippi and first African American U.S. Secretary of Agriculture and Member of Congress at 7pm in the Smith Chapel.
Tomorrow will see an open forum with Espy in Hubbell Hall from 1-2pm, then migrate from the Simpson College campus to the downtown Indianola square, where Peanut Beer will be for sale at West Hill Brewery from 4-5pm, and Saturday will have a free scavenger hunt for kids and families with over a dozen participating downtown businesses from 9am to noon.
