The Newton girls wrestling teams will be on the mats today competing for a spot at the inaugural class 2A individual state wrestling tournament, while the Cardinal basketball teams take on ranked Dutch teams in Pella.

The Cardinals girls wrestlers will travel to the regional tournament at South Tama, which features an eight school field including conference rivals Indianola and Pella. Newton has had two wrestlers ranked in the top ten this season with sophomore Kylee Adams at 105 pounds and junior Ashlyn Van Manen at 190 pounds. To advance to the Girls State Wrestling Tournament next Thursday and Friday at Xtream Arena in Corallville, a wrestler must be a regional champion or runner-up.

Tonight in Pella, the Newton girls and boys basketball teams begin a stretch of four straight conference games on the road. In their first meeting earlier this season, the Cardinals were swept by the Dutch at home on December 20th. The Newton girls lost 75-47, while the Cardinal boys were defeated 62-57.

The regional tournament for the Newton girls wrestling team at South Tama tonight begins at 4 p.m., and Cardinals’ basketball games at Pella can be heard live on the KRLS3 stream at KNIAKRLS.com, beginning with pregame coverage at 5:45 p.m.
