The City of Newton has released the latest quarterly report for the sanitary landfill just south of town. In October, November, and December, the City says the landfill processed 7,384 tons of solid waste and diverted over 275 tons of material for recycling. Those materials included household recyclables, scrap metal, concrete rubble, and tires. Several projects were completed between October and December as well. They include staff hauling 16 loads of leaves from the yard waste area to the farm field borrow site to improve soil quality, and the installation of a gate on the southeast section of the landfill along West 8th Street South to prevent unauthorized entry after hours.
The Newton Sanitary Landfill is currently operating under winter hours, which are in effect through the end of March. Monday through Friday, the landfill is open from 7:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. It’s also open the first Saturday of the month from 8:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.
