The Norwalk basketball teams swept a varsity doubleheader against Indianola on Friday night, heard live on 94.3 KNIA and the KNIA3 stream. The Warrior girls won 79-43 and the boys prevailed 74-64, both achieving a season-high for points.

The Class 4A sixth-ranked Norwalk girls set a school record with 15 made 3-pointers, including nine in the first half. The Warriors’ trapping pressure defense also created a slew of Indianola turnovers and transition scores early, leading to a 26-4 margin after one quarter. The Indians played much better basketball offensively the rest of the way but could not slow down Norwalk’s potent attack.

Sisters Braylyn and Bailey Birmingham paced a balanced Warrior scoring ledger with 17 points each, followed by Hannah Overholser with 11 points, Payton Travis and Grace Linder nine each, Pearl Brown eight and Ava Carlson six. Travis, Linder and both Birmingham girls all made three 3-pointers on the night. Norwalk, which defeated Indianola 69-30 in December, has now won consecutive games vs. the Indians for the first time since 2007 and 2008.

The Indianola girls were led by Alexa Guyer’s 13 points and eight from Madison Grover. Guyer made three 3-pointers in the second half, highlighted by a half-court shot to end the third period.

The boys game featured big runs and momentum swings, and was in stark contrast to the teams’ first meeting when Indianola won a 37-32 defensive struggle. Norwalk led 23-7 late in the first quarter behind four threes by Grady Sigrist, but Andrew DeWall scored five points in the final six seconds of the period to spark Indianola. The Indians twice pulled within two points and trailed 33-29 at the half. Indianola later cut a 13-point deficit down to one in the third, but again the Warriors responded and pulled ahead by 15 points in the fourth.

Norwalk senior Cameron Thomas put together a stellar second half and scored a team-high 21 points. Sigrist finished with five treys and 19 points, Kaleb Foltz scored 10 and Mason Johnson and Tim Koerselman added nine each. Indianola was led by the one-two punch of sophomores George Blake and Easton McGraw, who scored 22 and 17 points, respectively. Blake knocked down six of the team’s 12 3-pointers.

The Norwalk girls improved to 17-1 overall and 8-1 in the Little Hawkeye Conference. The boys are now 8-7 overall and 6-3 in conference play. Both teams travel to Dallas Center-Grimes on Tuesday night for a doubleheader.

The Indianola girls dropped to 6-11 overall and 5-4 in the Little Hawkeye. The boys are 4-10 and 4-5. The Indians host ADM on Monday night.
