An Electrical Service Contract that will help fix problems with some of Newton’s outdoor warning sirens has been completed. Van Maanen Electric in Newton has installed electrical services to four of the city’s nine outdoor warning siren sites.
Newton Mayor Evelyn George says four solar-powered, 130-decibel rotating sirens have sometimes malfunctioned because the solar charger battery has not been charged.
“We certainly heard from the public that those sirens are important. We found that solar power is not always as reliable as it needs to be.”
New DC-powered rotating sirens are being installed at these four locations. But overhead electrical service needed to be provided; that’s what Van Maanen Electric provided for $11,000. The Newton company was awarded the contract by Newton City Council members back on October 7th. The total amount of general fund bond revenue the City of Newton set aside for the replacement of the four solar-powered outdoor warning sirens is $50,000.
