clubhouse-3

Staff in the City of Newton’s Community Development Department are proposing some personnel changes at the city-owned golf course to grow services and revenue through the new clubhouse that’s being built. It’s scheduled to be completed before the start of the golf season.

Staff wants to add golf simulators, offer golf lessons, increase food and beverage options, have more events and tournaments. But to accomplish all that, the Newton City Council is being asked to hire an additional golf professional and change the title of that role to Westwood Operations Manager. Staff believes that better reflects the work current Golf Pro  Brad Sponseller is doing. There would be no salary change. Newton’s Community Development staff says Sponseller has no time to do normal duties, such as golf lessons. The Golf Pro that would be added at a lower salary would focus on growing use of the golf course through lessons, additional tournaments, and off season events and activities. This proposal is on the agenda for tonight’s Newton CIty Council meeting, which begins at 6 p.m. at City Hall.
