Monroe City officials hope to collect approximately $2,500 to plant up to ten trees in Silent City Cemetery. This past fall the Monroe City Council approved the plan to add the trees to balance out the tree distribution in newer sections of the cemetery. The City notes the additional trees will not impact any empty or occupied burial spaces.

The tree planting will be overseen by a committee consisting of Kim Jenkins, Kathy Van Veen, Jennifer St. Peter, Sean Wilson, Meghan Ferneding and Brian Briles. The committee plans to plant the trees in March or April. The estimated $2,500 cost will cover the cost of the trees, planting, protective tubing around their trunks, and water reservoirs to help ensure their survivability.

Anyone who would like to contribute to the project, can send or drop off checks (with the memo Cemetery Tree Project) at Monroe City Hall at 206 West Sherman Street or contact Brian Briles to pick them up.
