Due to upcoming retirements, the Newton City Council has added $105,000 to the Fiscal Year 2026 City Budget. The money will be used to cover salaries for three new temporary positions in the City’s Administration and Police Departments, with $35,000 going towards an additional financial analyst and the remaining $70,000 being spent on two additional police officers. Three long term employees plan to retire by June 30th, 2026, and Newton Mayor Evelyn George says city staff and city council members agreed that replacements for these employees should be hired early, so they are fully trained when the retirements take effect.
“Like so many companies, there are people of retirement age…that boomer generation…getting ready to retire. The city and law enforcement are some areas where it is really important to have time to be trained and go through the processes they do, so we can continue to serve the citizens.”
The Newton City Council has authorized the hiring of the additional financial analyst for July 1st, And the two additional police officers by August 1st.
