After more than three decades of use, the furnace at the Newton Public Library is going to be replaced. Newton Mayor Evelyn George says City Council members have unanimously approved a recommendation from the Newton Public Library Board, to replace the original furnace for $30,819.
“It’s hard for me to believe it’s 33 years old. I remember the assembly line moving books from the old library to the new one. So the library has a new interior layout, a new roof, and now it’s getting a new furnace.”
City staff noted replacement parts are no longer available for the current unit, which heats the 18,000 square feet of the library’s main interior. Reeves Heating and Cooling in Newton will replace the furnace this summer.
