With significant snowfall taking place today, residents are reminded to follow  snow ordinances  in Knoxville and Marion County.

The Knoxville Snow Ordinance is designed to allow city crews to more easily plow streets. When the ordinance is in effect, parking any vehicle on city streets is illegal, and those in violation may be cited  with a $25 fine and/or be towed. The Knoxville Snow Ordinance generally goes into effect any time the forecast calls for one inch or more of snow. Once declared, the ordinance stays in effect until the storm ends and the street has been plowed from curb to curb or 24 hours have passed.

For Marion County, the snow ordinance states that snow from private drives shall not be placed on the roadway or shoulders, and that it is not the policy of the county to sand and salt roads that are slick, slippery, or dangerous due to the formation of frost.  Drivers should use extreme caution when frost could be present, and are encouraged to reduce their speed to the appropriate rate for the conditions of the road. County motor graders and snow plows will not be in operation after 8:00 PM and will not begin before 4:00 AM. If conditions are too hazardous, snow removal operations may be suspended until the County Engineer deems it safe to resume.  Roads may only have one lane plowed for a period of time. After all roads have been opened to two-lane travel, snow removal will only be carried out during normal working hours.

The county will not replace mailboxes damaged or knocked down by the force of the snow thrown from the plow. To see the complete county snow ordinance you can follow this link
