The Norwalk basketball teams swept a Little Hawkeye Conference doubleheader vs. Newton on Tuesday night while the Warrior bowling teams split their final dual meet of the year with Pella.

BASKETBALL:

The Class 4A fifth-ranked Norwalk girls continue finding new ways to impress. In Tuesday’s 58-23 home win over Newton, the Warriors finished a perfect 27-for-27 at the free throw line. Norwalk led 11-6 after one quarter, then took control by scoring 26 unanswered points to start the second. They led 43-7 early in the third, triggering a running clock for the remainder of the game.

The Warriors, who made a combined 40 3-pointers in their three previous games, knocked down only one trey against the Cardinals but attacked the basket at every opportunity. They scored most of their points off steals, drives and foul shots. Freshman Braylyn Birmingham hit all 13 of her free throws and led the way with 23 points. Senior Bailey Birmingham shot 8-for-8 at the line and scored 19.

The Norwalk boys also completed a season sweep of Newton. The Warriors used a 21-3 first-half run to go up 25-8, then held off every Cardinal challenge to win 56-41. Norwalk showcased excellent passing on the night and was at their best in transition. Unofficially, Kaleb Foltz led the Warriors with 15 points, followed by Cameron Thomas with 11 and Grady Sigrist 10.

The Norwalk girls improved to 19-1 overall and 10-1 in the Little Hawkeye Conference, tied for first place with Dallas Center-Grimes. The boys are now 9-9 overall and 7-4 in the LHC. The Warriors finish conference play at home vs. Oskaloosa on Friday night.

BOWLING:

The Norwalk bowlers faced Pella at Newton’s Cardinal Lanes on Tuesday. The Warrior girls finished 9-2 in dual meets with a 2219-2139 victory. The boys lost to the Dutch 2810-2559, falling to 4-7 overall.

Top two-game series scores for the Norwalk girls included Julia Palen with a 319, Ellery Racz 292, Anna Curran 288, Elivia Stout 287 and Atto White 283. Racz bowled the highest individual game with a 169. The Warriors led by 91 pins after the individual round and opened the Baker games with a 200 to take control.

Blake Halsted led the Norwalk boys with a 448 series, rolling games of 243 and 205. Brytan Bassman bowled a 398 series and Gavin Housley had a 375.

The Norwalk bowlers travel to Oskaloosa’s Statesmen Lanes for the conference tournament later this week. The girls meet is Friday and the boys compete on Saturday.
