The Central College women’s basketball team took down the University of Dubuque 65-57 behind a career high 30 points from senior Abby Johnson, while Joshua Van Gorp became the all-time leading scorer in Dutch men’s basketball history in a 78-67 loss to the Spartans.
In the opening game of the doubleheader heard live on 92.1 KRLS, Johnson shot 11-of-20 from the field and 6-of-12 from three-point range to lead the Dutch to the senior day win. She added six rebounds and a steal. The Dutch (13-10, 6-8 American Rivers) got out to a hot start leading 35-28 at halftime, while shooting 44.4% from the field and 50% from behind the arc. The Dutch were in control for most of the game, holding the lead for 35:38. Central also held Dubuque to 0 fast break points and only five second chance points. Samantha Scott knocked down three triples to score nine points in the victory, while Hannah Dau added six points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals and Gabby Moore contributed six points and a team-high seven rebounds. For the game, Central shot 36.2% from the field, 35.7% from three, and went 13-13 from the free throw line.
In the men’s game, Van Gorp scored 16 points to reach 1,859 for his career, passing Colby Taylor’s mark of 1,856 points from 2013-2017. The Dutch got off to a hot start in the nightcap, shooting 48.5% from the field and 50% from three-point range in the first half to take a 44-37 lead at halftime. In the second half the Spartans countered by shooting 51.9% from the field and limited Central to just 23 points. Kaleb Brand rained in a new career high 31 points on 12-24 shooting to lead the Dutch, while adding seven rebounds and six assists. Owen Schipper was the third Central player to reach double figures with 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting from three.
The Central basketball teams will play their last home doubleheader of the winter against Nebraska Wesleyan on Wednesday, before wrapping up the regular season with a twin bill at Luther next Saturday.
