
Led by district champions Dominic Tigner and Kolton Borcherding-Johnson, the Norwalk boys wrestling team qualified eight individuals for state at Saturday’s Class 3A, District 6 Tournament held in Marshalltown. Also on Saturday, the Warrior boys basketball team was defeated at Dowling Catholic, 68-40.
WRESTLING:
The Norwalk wrestlers scored 168 points and placed second out of eight teams at the district meet. Indianola was the champion with 220 points and Ankeny took third with 156.5.
Borcherding-Johnson, who is ranked 2nd in Class 3A by IAwrestle, was the 285-pound district champion and is now 35-1 on the season. He won his first two matches by technical fall and won by medical forfeit in the finals. Tigner, ranked 10th at 157, went 3-0 with a pin, a major decision and a 7-3 win over Ankeny’s Andrew Rouh, improving to 29-6. He is a three-time state qualifier.
Placing second in their district bracket for Norwalk and qualifying for state were Madox Ward at 120 pounds, Blake Lee at 144 and ninth-ranked Harrison Tripp at 215. Ward and Lee both won four out of five matches, including Lee’s exciting 8-7 decision that clinched a state berth.
Advancing to state with third-place finishes were 10th-ranked Asaiah Martinez at 113, Tyler Stanford at 175 and 12th-ranked Victor Esparza at 190. After losing in the semifinal round, Martinez responded with three consecutive tech-fall wins. Placing fourth for the Warriors and just missing out on state were Blake Stanford at 132 and Kadan Borcherding-Johnson at 165.
The Warriors’ eight state qualifiers will begin competing at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines on Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. The Class 3A State Tournament continues Thursday through Saturday.
BASKETBALL:
The Norwalk boys basketball team played a non-conference game at Dowling Catholic on Saturday afternoon and lost 68-40, dropping to 10-10 overall. The Warriors were outscored 21-6 in the second quarter and 13-7 in the third. Cameron Thomas scored a team-high 13 points and Grady Sigrist had eight. Norwalk closes the regular season on Tuesday night with a home game against ADM.
BOWLING:
The Norwalk girls bowlers travel to Keokuk’s Arrowhead Bowl on Monday for a Class 2A State Qualifying Meet at 9:00 a.m. The eight-team field also includes Pella and Oskaloosa. The top two finishers will advance to the State Team Tournament following 15 Baker games. The top eight individuals will also qualify for state following a separate three-game series.
