With many cities across Iowa battling budget difficulties, the Iowa Legislature is still in the early discussion and committee stages of any possible property tax reform. Indianola Interim City Manager Wade Wagoner tells KNIA News during budget discussions they have instructed city department heads to cut 10% of their budget heading into FY26, but State Senator Julian Garrett says high property taxes is the most common thing legislators hear from constituents.
“Some of the cities and local governments really think they are not getting enough money, but when we get as many complaints as we’ve gotten over the years about their high property taxes and how they’ve gone up, you get your attention. I think that committee is still looking at what they might be able to do, so don’t be surprised if there is another property tax bill at some point but I don’t know what the details might be.”
Garrett also said he does not serve on the Ways and Means Committee, which would handle any property tax reform bills. To listen to the full interview, click below.
