The Central College women’s basketball team did something no Dutch team has done since 2003 Tuesday evening, as they ended a 47-game Simpson winning streak over Central in a 96-89 double-overtime thriller in the American Rivers Conference quarterfinals as heard live on 94.3 KNIA.

The Storm and Dutch traded baskets early, with the normally sharpshooting Storm struggling to find the range from outside as Central led 22-19 after the first, but the Storm struck back building a lead as high as seven in the second quarter but were unable to pull away but held a 38-37 lead at the half. Neither team would lead by more than four points the entire second half, with Simpson leading 53-52 at the end of the third quarter. Simpson holding on to a two-point lead, Emily Naughton scored a bucket to tie the score, then the Storm scored on a drive by Elle Street to lead 71-69 with just seconds remaining, but Naughton came up clutch with a driving shot with .4 seconds in regulation to force overtime.

Simpson went on an 8-0 run in the first overtime, seemingly taking full control with their biggest lead of the night with three minutes to go, but the Dutch wouldn’t go away. Central went on an 11-2 run to take a one point lead with under five seconds left, but a Simpson drive led to two free throws for Simpson’s Elle Street, who went 1-2 to tie the score and force a second overtime.

The Storm ran out of gas as the Dutch methodically scored in the paint to take a lead they wouldn’t relinquish, and hit the clutch free throws to seal the win. Naughton scored 21 points to lead the Dutch who advance to the quarterfinals Thursday at Coe College, while Molly Lutmer led all scorers with 24 points for the Storm.

Simpson’s season comes to a close graduating four seniors.
