The Pella Police Department remains committed to officer safety, professional development, and public service through its ongoing Ground Defense and Subject Arrest and Control Program. Under the leadership of Chief Shane McSheehy, this program has been in place since 2020 and continues to enhance the skills and confidence of Pella officers each month.
The program, which is Jiu-Jitsu based and modeled after police academy defensive tactics curriculum, provides officers with skills in self-defense, combative subject control, handcuffing, and grappling. Each month, officers participate in structured training sessions designed to ensure they can effectively and safely manage real-world encounters.
“This training is more than just technique—it’s about preparing our officers to make split-second decisions under stress, improving their ability to exercise sound judgment in dynamic situations, and ultimately reducing the likelihood of excessive force,” said Chief McSheehy. “By incorporating stress inoculation and conditioning exercises, we are equipping our officers with both the physical and mental resilience needed to perform their duties with professionalism and confidence.”
McSheehy says that consistent training enhances officer safety, reduces injuries, and improves overall job performance. Additionally, he says the program serves as an important component of the department’s commitment to officer wellness, providing participants with a high-intensity cardio workout while reinforcing vital skills that can be lifesaving in the field.
