Dutch Race Past Monks for Two Baseball Wins 

Piling up 25 runs in just 14 innings, the Central College baseball team swept Saint Joseph’s College (Maine) Thursday afternoon. The Dutch (7-3) won the opener 11-6 before taking a 14-3 win over the Monks in the nightcap.

From his #3 spot in the lineup, center fielder Max Steinlage was the catalyst for the Dutch offense, recording two hits, two runs scored, and three RBIs in each contest, and also had a two-run homer in each of the scheduled seven-inning affairs. Chance Dreyer’s solo shot in the opener and Dom DeLaPaz’s grand slam in the second game gave the Dutch four total home runs on the day. Shortstop Garrett Guenther had two hits in the first game and second baseman Jackson Torbit had a pair of RBIs. In the second game, designated hitter Caleb Douglass had two hits and third baseman Brayden Sawyer had two RBIs.

Battling through a tough third inning in which the Monks tallied five runs, Mark Kenney struck out eight in the opening game as the starting pitcher and earned his second win of the season. Cameron Moreno allowed just one earned run in two innings of relief. In his first collegiate start in the nightcap, Bryer Wiley went the distance and struck out three while scattering seven hits and allowing three earned runs.

The Dutch wrap up their trip to Florida today with a doubleheader against The College of Saint Scholastica (Minn.) at 2:45 pm (EST).

Central Tennis Teams Split Final Florida Matches on Thursday

Wrapping up their spring breaks trips to Florida, the Central College men’s and women’s tennis teams split their two matches on Thursday. Both Dutch teams defeated Wittenberg (Ohio) 5-2 in the morning, but fell to Transylvania (Ky.) in the evening, with the men losing 5-2 and the women dropping their match 4-3.

For the Central men, they opened the day by sweeping all three doubles contests, with Ayden Fletcher and AJ Wilkins winning 7-6 at #1, Jack Briggs and Benny Ramker winning 6-2 at #2, and Travis Subbert and Ernest Alvarez Chedzoy winning 6-3 at #3. In the singles matches, Jack Briggs won his fourth straight singles match by securing a 6-0, 6-0 win at #3, while Alvarez Chedzoy won 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 at #4, Subbert won 6-3, 6-1 at #5, and Ramker won 6-1, 6-2 at #6. In the second match of the day against Transylvania, the Dutch won just one of the doubles matches, as Briggs and Ramker won 6-2 at #2. Biggs further extended his singles winning streak in the afternoon, winning at #3 singles 6-3, 6-4 for his fifth straight win. Ramker added the only other point for Central in the match, winning 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 at #6 singles.

Against Wittenberg, the Dutch women took two of the three doubles matches, with Madi Whalen and Keleigh Hall winning 6-3 at #2 doubles, and Abbie Den Adel and Emily Blom winning 6-0 at #3 doubles. In the singles matches, Central lost at #1 and #2 but finished well in the back half. Emma Murphy picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win at #3 singles and Emily Blom snagged a 6-3, 6-2 win at #4. Hall won 6-2, 7-5 at #5 singles and Kalina Schubert dominated with a 6-0, 6-0 win at #6. Against Transylvania, the Dutch took just one of the three doubles matches, with Hall and Whalen winning 6-4 at #2. In singles action, Murphy won 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 at #3, Blom won 6-2, 6-0 at #4, and Hall won 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 at #5, but it wasn’t enough to pull out the match victory.

The Dutch women’s tennis team resumes their spring season on Wednesday at home against Truman State, while the Central men’s squad is off until hosting Wartburg and Illinois College on Saturday, March 22nd.
