The new baseball coach at Newton High School believes it’s important to have players that can play multiple positions. Darin Tisdale says throughout Little League, Babe Ruth League, high school, college, semi-pro, and men’s league, he was a versatile player who saw action at every position but catcher.
“It taught me about when playing shortstop I know what it’s like for the outfielder to have to find the cutoff guy, or I know what it feels like to listen to the infielders call out directions. I feel knowing different positions helps you at your main position. Knowing the positions around you and what goes on and what it looks like from that position helps you as a player.”
Tisdale thinks this year’s roster already features a lot of players who can fit in different positions. He says that’s a positive as high schools develop the pitch count rule, leading to multiple pitchers per game. That means moving players from other positions to the mound and vice versa.
The Cardinal baseball team opens the season at Saydel on May 19th.
