The Simpson College baseball team defeated Wartburg Friday night in the series opener and will continue the series with a doubleheader today in the opening weekend of conference play.
Friday’s game was knotted at zero heading into the third inning but the Storm put up a four spot in the frame after a single from Ian Baldwin and a double by Nate Cagley. The Knights closed the gap scoring two at the top of the sixth, but Simpson answered right back with two more runs after a Matthew Florence double and Sam Campin single. Wartburg scored one run in the seventh and the ninth while Simpson tacked on one more in the eighth as they picked up the 7-4 win. Storm starting pitcher Trey Castile picked up the win throwing 5 ⅓ innings and recorded eight strikeouts.
The Storm improve to 6-8 on the season and start American Rivers Conference play 1-0. Simpson will now take on Wartburg in a doubleheader today starting at 1:00 pm on 94.3 KNIA with the pregame starting at 12:45.
